Lifestyle home and shed
“Our home is just what we wanted.”
Rod and Diane McKenzie, owners
Current owners: Rod and Diane McKenzie
Year Completed: 2013
Dimensions: 300 sq meters
Key materials: Steel skeleton with timber framing and truss in the habitable area. Clad in corrugated iron all over.
Rod and Diane wanted a shed and a home in one. And it all needed to look like one seamless structure.
In meeting with the McKenzies, we established the following specifications:
The shed was for storing Rod’s collection of cars, bikes and a boat which needed to double up as a workshop with a hoist.
They also wanted a two-bedroom home, with their bedroom/bathroom separated from the guest bedroom and bathroom by an open plan kitchen and lounge area.
Specialised Structures designed the workshop to accommodate Rod’s collection, making it high enough for a hoist.
Our architects Dunstan Design & Consultancy designed the two-bedroom living space to fit onto the workshop.
An upstairs mezzanine was included through the house – providing the McKenzies with extra space should they need it in the future. We also added the full height roller door on the garage in case Rod should need to get a bigger vehicle into that space.
To create a seamless flow, the entire structure was clad in ironsand corrugated iron.
We supplied all the materials required for this build in a kitset and provided support to the local building contractor during the construction process. We then helped to finish the exterior by installing the cladding.
Here is a modern contemporary structure, which reflects both the owners’ style and the quality of a Specialised Structures building.
“Our home is just what we wanted” says Rod. “It’s warm and quiet with great natural lighting. It’s both stylish and practical with a workshop big enough for our needs, and some.”
